Laboratory Design

Abstract

Laboratory automation, new procedures, downsizing, consolidations and regulatory changes are problems that the lab managers are presented with today. Laboratories are required to adjust to these changes in an economical and efficient way. How can the laboratory be adapted to work with the changing roles of technicians and technologists, protect them from exposture to biosafety and chemical hazards, meet ergonomic and handicapped criteria, and increase efficiency? How can the lab be equipped to handle the new technologies such as robotics and DNA amplification? This presentation will help the laboratorian understand the various implications of these changes, and give them the confidence to justify the necessary changes when developing the laboratory design.

Upon completion of this presentation the participant will be able to do the following:

List laboratory design phases which normally involve laboratory personnel.
List the movement items used to evaluate laboratory efficiency.
List items that can be designed for flexibility in the laboratory.
List benefits of design flexibility.
List requirements for an emergency eye wash station.
List requirements for various biosafety levels.
Define "ergonomics", relating to laboratory design.
List areas of laboratory design that are affected by robotics.
