Let's start with the cost: $85 per 1000 impressions.

That's just 8.5 cents per user -- a lot less than mailing information to potential clients. And these aren't just any browsers on the web; these are clinical laboratory scientists that are here to learn. They're serious about their profession. but it doesn't stop there; in addition to that group, are pathologists, physicians with POL's, educators, students, LIS/HIS managers, biomedical engineers and more!

The Numbers Game

Med TechNet received 789 raw "hits" during the month of October. This is supposed to mean that 789 people accessed and viewed our home page that month, however, it is possible that just one person viewed our home page and simply hit their Reload button 788 times. 789 separate people or just one (with far too much time on their hands): it registers the same way when it comes to raw hits. As an advertiser, you need to know about raw hits, because a raw hit is recorded each time a page is accessed, and if your ad is on that page, that's what you pay for. In reality, the true number of separate viewers is somewhere in between these extremes.

Another way a single viewer may see your ad multiple times is when they come to our home page, see your ad, then go to read the abstract for an upcoming presentation, and decide to hit their browser's Back button, which re-displays your ad a second time. Fortunately, most of the popular browsers used today utilize caches, meaning that the recently viewed pages are stored temporarily on their hard disk. So, when they hit their Back button, their browser simply loads the page from disk and does not generate another request from our server. The end result is, they see your ad several times, but only one raw hit is recorded here.

The bottom line is that the extra impressions viewed by users hitting their Back button offsets the times when a user hits their Reload button. So, the actual number of people viewing your ad is fairly well represented by the raw hit value.

An advertiser with an ad during the month of October would have been billed just $67.07.

The Importance of a Good Ad

Getting your ad online and displayed to users is our job. Getting people to click on your ad to access your web site is your job. You need to be creative. Statistics

As an advertiser on Med TechNet, you will be provided with a special URL which will give you real-time statistics for your ad! You will know, instantly, how many impressions have been displayed to users and how many have clicked through to reach your web site. You'll also know the exact day and time for each of these events. In addition, the IP address and IP host (if known) are displayed for each click through browser, providing you with invaluable information about where interest in your company is coming from. Mostly in the .edu domain (univerities)? Mostly in the .com domain (commercial sites)? Any interest from outside the US (domains such as .ca for Canada, .uk for Great Britain, .de for Germany, .au for Australia, etc.)?

Great! How do we begin?

If you currently have a web site and a graphic image, you're mostly done. Just send E-Mail to, [email protected] and let us know who you are, what kind of ad you would like to run and for how long. If you want to try it for just one month to see how it goes, or want to stop after 1000 hits, we can arrange that too.

Once we're all agreed on a graphic and a term, your ad will generally be placed online in less than 24 hours. We'll need your graphic image; what's most convenient for you? If the image is on the web, give us the URL and we'll grab it. If it's at an ftp site, tell us where, in what directory and the file name. You can also E-Mail to us (MIME or UUencoded). Then, give us the URL that your image should point to (usually, your site's home page).

As soon as it is setup, we will E-Mail your special URL so that you can begin tracking activity for your ad immediately.

Payment

At the end of each month, a bill will be sent via E-Mail. Just send a check for the balance due (or provide credit card info), and let us know if you would like to continue your ad. If you feel the ad is generating the expected (or better!) amount of traffic -- great! If it's not working for you, the ad can be discontinued as quickly as it was started.
